Announcing #WomenWhoWrite, a New Initiative to Promote Female-Identifying Musical Theatre Writers
First, a little about me:
I trained at Mountview on the MA Musical Theatre course a few years ago and, until last year, worked in casting for film and television. Recently however, after I became ill with an unknown chronic disease, I left my job to focus on writing a musical about my journey.
The result was Chronic, which was performed at the Tristan Bates Theatre, The Old Red Lion Theatre and is soon to be put on at The Other Palace next year.
While I sought a diagnosis I navigated the world of medical misogyny and unconscious bias which made me realise the importance of musical theatre as a platform to fight for the lack of equality there still is for women in all aspects of life.
So, alongside my producer, Flossie Golightly, I now want to help those who don’t feel properly represented in musical theatre by sharing their songs as a way of allowing women’s stories to be told.
Today, I am thrilled to announce that we are collaborating with 10glo.com to present Musical Theatre #WomenWhoWrite, an online call-to-action dedicated to finding, supporting and sharing new songs by female-identifying musical theatre writers.
Women are still underrepresented in musical theatre and we believe this will be a vital platform to showcase undiscovered talent within the theatre community.
We want to hear from you! To launch the initiative, we are looking for video submissions of either:
- Stand-alone songs with a clear narrative.
- Songs from a musical you are working on.
We are particularly interested in musicals or stories about women and their lived experiences.
To get started, just head to 10glo.com/register to create an account. Then, when you’re ready, upload your video submission and share it on Twitter with the hashtag #WomenWhoWrite.
All video submissions must be uploaded by November 30, 2020 at 11:59 PM EST.
We will be shortlisting 8 songs that will then be performed and streamed on 10glo.
One final tip: if you enjoy editing and want to make something fancy, have at it, but what we’re really looking for is what’s in your heart, soul and mind.
We truly cannot wait to see the videos that you fabulous women upload.
