Bobby Cronin accompanies Chase Crandell on the debut of “Running”, a new song for ‘Father’, our modern-day narrator of the Mary and Max story. From the beginning of the piece, Father has been telling his 13-year old daughter Lily the story of Mary and Max in his attempt to get Lily out from behind her locked bedroom door. At this point in Act 2, Lily has challenged Father as to why he’s never told the story to her before. They argue. She opens the door only to slam it on his face. We stay in the modern world for most of the song…until the end as Mary, dark and drunk, enters. Father looks right at her to sing the final line, “Running from you…”
This is the first major hint of the upcoming reveal as to why Father really knows the Mary and Max story he’s telling his daughter.
